This is virgin  silk fibers that are the discards of the silk reeling process.  During reeling of the silk cocoon sometimes the fibers tangle and get caught in the gears of the silk reels.  The silk is so strong that it must be cut from the machines. 

It  has never been spun or woven before. 

This textured silk is great for spinning by the handful.  Simply draft a handful and let the twist run into the fibers, taking all the glorious texture with it.  The fibers vary in length with some being very long.  It makes a lovely, velvety textured yarn.  

Or use it as embellishment for felting or other work.
